DETROIT — Appearing to anticipate critics, Chrysler rolled out its prototype Jeep Wrangler Unlimited EV at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show with a caveat. Although this electric vehicle is a two-wheel-drive Wrangler, the automaker said it is exploring a four-wheel-drive version "to demonstrate the full reach of the company's advanced electric-drive technologies.
"When this technology is developed, [it] will result in off-road capability ideally suited for the Jeep brand," Chrysler said in a statement.
In the meantime, this five-passenger SUV is said to sprint from zero to 60 mph in about 9 seconds. It has a top speed greater than 90 mph and all-electric range of 40 miles. Total driving range is pegged at up to 400 miles.
The conventional 2009 Jeep Wrangler two-wheel-drive model equipped with a 3.8-liter V6 and a four-speed automatic transmission returns 15 mpg in city driving and 20 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.
The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited EV is equipped with an electric motor that produces 268 horsepower and 295 pound-feet of torque. Other powertrain details include an advanced lithium-ion battery system and a small gasoline engine with an integrated electric generator.
Exterior cues include a new ENVI Green Pearl exterior with "EV" graphics and a dark slate gray interior.
