    What is it?
    Jeep Varsity

    What's special about it?
Jeeps says the Varsity is a go-anywhere, do-anything urban adventure concept vehicle that blurs the line between street and off-road performance. It has a longer wheelbase than the current Jeep Grand Cherokee (for more interior room), but it also has shorter overhangs. The Varsity is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that generates 300 horsepower and 255 foot-pounds of torque. That engine is connected to an automatic transmission and a shift-on-the-fly transfer case that provides rear-wheel drive, high-range four-wheel drive or low-range four-wheel drive. A custom independent front and rear suspension (with 19-inch wheels) is designed to provide a level of ride and handling equal to a sport sedan. Estimated performance figures are zero to 60 in 7.1 seconds and a top speed of 130 mph. Both the interior and exterior are strongly styled. The interior features heavy-duty materials, with polished metal used for the air vents, transmission console and certain dash buttons.

    Why should I care?
Jeep products have always had a loyal following thanks to their rugged design and aura. So it's interesting to look at the Varsity. Is it a sport sedan that has been given an infusion of Jeep character and ability? Or is it simply a watered-down Grand Cherokee? Hard to say, but the Varsity shows that even Jeep is looking to break down the divisions between car, truck and SUV design.
