Two of the hottest topics currently dominating the automotive scene are SUVs and environmentally- friendly vehicles. In a move that seems so obvious it's brilliant, Daimler-Chrysler has combined these concepts into one vehicle called the Jeep Commander. The philosophy behind the Commander was to create an upscale sport-utility vehicle that is also fuel-efficient and earth-conscious.
Originally conceived with a fuel- cell drivetrain that used gasoline to create electricity, the Commander's current power comes entirely from electricity. Daimler-Chrysler still hopes to make the fuel- cell a reality in future automobiles, and plans to have a working methanol, hybrid fuel cell system in the Commander by the end of 1999.
Other technologies utilized in the Commander's production include injection- molded plastic body panels and an "on-demand" roof rack that can be activated when needed for luggage, but is otherwise flush with the roof for improved aerodynamics. The suspension can raise or lower four inches when traveling between on- and off-road driving, and the side view mirrors have wipers and 180 180-degree convex mirrors to eliminate blind spots.
Perhaps the most striking aspect of the Commander is its styling, which manages to look cutting edge without losing its Jeep heritage.
