What Is It?
2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT-8
What's Special About It?
Chrysler is going after the Porsche Cayenne and BMW X5 by introducing its Street Racing Technology (SRT) into the rugged 4x4 package of its Grand Cherokee.
The Grand Cherokee SRT-8 is equipped with a special 6.1-liter version of the company's SRT Hemi V8. This goliath engine yields 415 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. Chrysler Group CEO and President Dieter Zetsche stated the obvious when he remarked during this vehicle's introduction that it was the "quickest, most powerful Jeep ever." Jeep says it'll blast from zero to 60 mph in less than 5 seconds.
And the physique certainly matches the performance. In keeping with the SRT-8 makeover seen on other Chrysler Group vehicles, the Grand Cherokee SRT-8 gets a lowered stance, along with new front and rear fascias. The latter features a cutout in the middle in order to house the dual 4-inch exhaust tips. Jeep has also eliminated the roof rack in order to increase the aerodynamics of the vehicle.
The full-time four-wheel-drive system has been specially tuned to deal with the increase in power as has the five-speed automatic transmission. Jeep has also added Brembo four-piston performance brakes at each wheel and retuned Electronic Stability Program.
A DVD-based navigation system is available as an option.
What's Edmunds' Take?
If the Grand Cherokee SRT-8 really bests the BMW and Porsche in terms of speed and performance and does so at a cheaper price, Chrysler's in-house speed shop (SRT) will gain street cred with a whole new crowd. — Phil Lienert
