WASHINGTON — Jaguar is recalling 6,085 2010 XF and XK vehicles because a power-steering fluid leak could result in a loss of power steering and pose a fire hazard, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"The power-steering assist pipes have been supplied with zinc-nickel plating that does not meet fully the corrosion protection requirements of Jaguar's engineering specification," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "After an extended period of time in service, corrosion of the pipes will occur that may lead to pin-holing of the pipe. Pin-holing of (these) pipes could allow pressurized power-steering fluid to leak into the under-hood and engine bay area.

"A loss of power-steering fluid will result in a loss of power assist steering. Also, that fluid may ignite it if comes into contact with an ignition source or a surface at sufficiently high enough temperature, causing a vehicle fire."

In other documentation filed with the federal government, Jaguar said there have been no reports of accidents, vehicle fires or injuries related to this defect.

Jaguar dealers will replace the power-steering fluid pipes with parts manufactured to the required corrosion protection specification. The recall is expected to begin on April 11. Owners can contact Jaguar at 1-800-452-4827.

lions208487: I don't think JD Power & Associates missed anything.  I think you did.  If you had read the entire article instead of just the headline, you would have known that no reports of this problem have surfaced.  That therefore means that there hasn't been a reliability issue ... and if the POTENTIAL problem is fixed on the cars, it doesn't really hinder reliability of the vehicle either.

Averting disaster and managing disaster are two entirely different things .... the same applies here.  Avoiding the problems related to this potential issue is different than reacting to them after they have happened.  I'd rather have a company be pro-active than reactive like Toyota was in regards to their unintentional acceleration problems.

This is not the first time I find JD Power & Assoc results to diverge somewhat from reality

Funny, because Jaguar just made JD power & Associates top 5 in reliability. Guess they missed something.
