Under the hood lurks a supercharged 4.2-liter V8 that makes 420 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque, up 120 hp and 103 lb-ft, respectively, from the normally aspirated engine in the standard XK. Coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, the powertrain combination is capable of achieving 0-60-mph acceleration in 4.9 seconds for the coupe and 5.0 seconds for the convertible.
Both cars should begin reaching Jaguar's U.S. dealers in December, priced from $85,000 for the coupe and $92,000 for the convertible.
Thanks to extensive use of aluminum, the new XKR is 150-220 pounds lighter than the 2006 model, contributing to quicker acceleration. The suspension has been reworked and stiffened, the brakes enlarged and the stability control system recalibrated, all aimed at further enhancing performance. Nineteen-inch alloy wheels and tires are standard, with 20-inchers available.
As with its predecessor, the '07 XKR gets unique bodywork and trim to set it apart from the standard XK, including new bumpers, grille, vented hood, quad exhausts and metallic power vents.
What this means to you: If you like the way the new XK looks, you'll love the way this one performs.
