Not Your Typical Cop Car: Jaguar XF Diesel

COVENTRY, England — Jaguar in the U.K. has created a police-spec edition of its XF Diesel S sedan, with impressive acceleration figures buttressed by surprisingly good fuel economy.

The XF Diesel S is powered by a 271-horsepower 3.0-liter twin-turbo unit that enables 0-60-mph acceleration in 5.9 seconds. Jaguar says combined fuel economy is 35 mpg.

The standard Jaguar XF Diesel S in Britain is priced starting at $59,000.

A police demonstrator model has been fitted with a roof-mounted light bar, blue and white flashing LEDs inside the grille, side-mounted blue flashing LEDs, blue-and-red flashing LEDs in the rear light clusters and an electronics package that bundles emergency radio, lights and other gear.

Inside Line says: Plenty quick, but plenty expensive — is this really what U.K. police departments are looking for? — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
