This is James Riswick for Inside Line and this week we have brand new spy video of the upcoming Jaguar XE. Although not officially announced by Jaguar just yet, the XE is a midsize sportscar that will slot below the XK in Jaguar's lineup. These prototypes were spotted during hot weather in Death Valley. They're wearing sheetmetal borrowed from the current XK, but it's clear that these prototypes are riding on a shorter wheelbase than the XK coupe. Extended wheel flares on the back end and a unique set of center-mounted exhaust pipes also signal that this is clearly an all-new car. The biggest question now is what engine this sportscar will use. Jaguar needs to keep its overall fuel consumption down, so a V8 isn't a given. A supercharged V6 would probably do the trick, but it's not clear if Jaguar would bring such a setup to the U.S. Expect to see an official unveil of this all-new Jaguar early next year with sales beginning in late 2012.

The XE's design hasn't been shown to the public yet. this is just a test mule wearing an XK body. The refeshed XK looks great and doesn't look aged at all except the dashboard.

It is not know whether it is an inline 6 or a V6 yet. The car will be aluminum. Tata steel makes aluminum as well. Jaguar is not going to get rid of their aluminum stamping facility at Castle Bromwich. Jaguar's CEO has said that they are trying to move all cars to two aluminum platforms. One for the sports cars and one for the sedans. Imagine what the Xf would drive like if it weighed 300 lbs less.

Will it be a V6? or a Straight 6? Hope it would be an inline-6 but as far as the sound goes, it will probably have a Supercharged V6.
I hope it won't end up looking like a shortened XK. That would a be huge disappointment especially because the XK design is aging as badly as all of Aston Martin's lineup (apart from the DB9).
Can't call it a spiritual successor if it doesn't look the part.
Will it use Tata steel instead of Aluminum?

JLR is reportedy working on a new 6 cylinder engine and have a new engine facility for the UK (and one in India for that market) on the way. that doesn't mean that they won't use the Ecoboost V6 from Ford for the time being though.

There has never been a Ford V8 in a Jaguar. The 5.0 and previous 4.0/4.2/4.4 V8 were all 100% Jaguar designs built on a new (in 1996) seperate Jaguar engine facility located at Ford Bridgend Engine plant in the UK. Ford had no part in the design of engine. All of the engine designers worked for Jaguar. Please get your facts straight. Only the 6 cylinder engine had Ford or PSA roots. The V8 engine in the Lincoln LS is Jaguar's own AJ-V8.

Anyone notice how the waggish Brit behind the wheel swerves toward the camera in the opening shot?

Id bet its some sort of Ford V6 because the 5.0 in jags and landies are Fords deep down.

I too am getting a little weary of these "Jaguar unreliability" cliches. Even JD Powers' high ratings for Jag (at the top of their rankings) is getting to be old news by now. So tonkatoytruck, if you have recently or currently owned a relatively current Jag and have some tales of woe, please share. Otherwise, let the tired old canard go unless you have real data to back it up. I guess you're right and JD Powers is wrong....

Wackford: that's a very hopeful sign in that ranking, because I'd like to think I can justify a used XKR as a "reasonable" purchase by me, a family guy of average means! After three years, though, and with limited parts or certified mechanics, I reason the Jaguar nameplate is still exporbitantly expensive to maintain. But please may I be wrong!
