PHOENIX, Arizona — A rare Jaguar XJ220S coupe, estimated to fetch $225,000-$300,000, will cross the auction block on January 19 in Phoenix, Arizona.
RM Auctions says the 680-horsepower XJ220S is one of only six built. The auction house says the XJ220S model was comprised of five "standard" units and one "modified" version.
In addition to its carbon-fiber body, the Walkinshaw-built XJ220S also gets a titanium exhaust system priced at almost $20,000 and a special exterior paint job said to match the Lamborghini color of Reventon Gray. The regular XJ220s featured aluminum bodies.
The carbon-fiber panels reduce the car's curb weight to 2,379 pounds, which the auction house calls "impressive for an 18-foot long Jaguar." In addition to the twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 engine, the unique Jag gets a five-speed manual transmission, four-wheel independent suspension and four-wheel disc brakes. Other details include a front splitter, wider sills and an adjustable rear spoiler.
"Most other examples of the rare XJ220S reside in museums or in vast car collections and as a result have attained a mythical status," said RM Auctions in a statement. It added that the XJ220S is an "undervalued" supercar.
Inside Line says: One of the more intriguing offerings of the busy winter auto auction season.

The interior sucks, even for 20 years ago - makes a Corvette's look good.

Most insane V6 super car ever... Come to think of it... only V6 super car ever? Either way... The original looks a bit better.

I saw that very car in West LA last June. A bit ricey in person (I honestly thought it was a kit car because of the lack of elegance in that wing integration), but the engine note was unmistakable, and the driver was genuinely frightened to have it on the road.

I'm not sure I agree that XJ220's are "mythical" or "undervalued." They are definitely rare, but that's largely because of the controversy surrounding the decision to equip the car with a V6 instead of the V12 initially mentioned. Whether deserved or not, this stigma will always be attached to the car.

As cool as this car is and was, that version looks 'riced-out', as the youth would put it.
Some of its elegance is definitely missing.
