Jaguar and Land Rover Enter India Market

MUMBAI, India — The Jaguar and Land Rover brands marked their official entry into the India market with the inauguration of a brand-new showroom at Mumbai's Ceejay House in Worli.

Both brands are now part of Tata Motors, which also owns the showroom that will feature the cars that went on sale late last week. The Jaguar range in India is composed of the XF, the XFR and the range-topping supercharged XKR. Jaguar also plans to bring the new XJ to India after the car's global launch.

The Discovery, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport are the three models from Land Rover on sale in India. The V8-engined Range Rover models will include both gasoline and diesel variants. The Freelander is being prepped for an Indian launch as well, according to a report in Autocar India.

There will be no diesel-engined Jaguars on sale here yet, but Tata Motors has future plans to do so.

The Jaguar models currently on sale range from the equivalent of $130,000 for the 5.0-liter V8 XF to $190,000 for the XFR. The Land Rover models range from $130,000 for the Discovery to $185,000 for the Range Rover.

"The luxury-car market in India is very small, but there is a huge opportunity there," notes Jaguar Land Rover chief executive David Smith. "We expect it to grow fast over the next 5-10 years."

Tata says it has no immediate plans to assemble either brand in India.
