Infiniti M45 Concept
What's Special About It?
After just two years in the United States market, Infiniti is already redesigning its M45 sedan, with only a concept M45 ready to share. Slated for 2006 production, the new M45 is expected to look much like the concept, as well as carry over the lion's share of its feature content.
The M45 Concept uses the same 4.5-liter V8 engine found in the current M45, as well as in the Q45 flagship sedan and FX45 crossover vehicle. It produces 340 horsepower and, for a sportier feel, is mated to a five-speed automanual transmission with a short-throw performance shifter. The M45 Concept rides on Infiniti's FM (front midship) platform which also carries the G35 coupe and sedan, as well as the FX SUV although more than half of the platform's design and components have been adapted specifically for the M45's use. A new active rear control suspension system works in harmony with steering input and vehicle speed to provide optimal ride and driver control. Another new driver-oriented feature is the Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system which will sound the alarm should the driver unintentionally veer from the current driving lane.
But a list of in-vehicle technology would seem incomplete these days without a navigation system (this one features a new interface with voice activated destination entry), as well as Bluetooth wireless connectivity and several "intelligent" items including Infiniti's Key system with push-button start and cruise control.
What's Edmunds' Take?
While the new technology is to be applauded, what is much appreciated is the major restyling on the M45 Concept's exterior. The current M45 has been described as boxy and bland, and the Concept is a chance to breathe some new life into the 2006 production model. A low, aggressive hoodline combined with a wide track and short overhangs and 19-inch wheels pushed to the outside corners of the 114.2-linch wheelbase, give the M45 Concept an undisputable sleeker look, and jewellike grille and crystal-look headlamps add some additional pizzazz as well.
