Dropping the top on Infiniti’s new G37 S convertible is easy; you just hit one button and wait 30 seconds. With the top stacked neatly in the trunk, this Infiniti is even easier to like.

It’s hard to deny the inherent thrill of piloting any open top car, but once the G’s top is popped, the sound of Nissan’s 3.7 liter V6 is comes front and center – up and downshifts from the 7-speed automatic transmission bring an instant smile to whoever happens to be behind the wheel.

However, that smile will not come as the result of handling prowess. For one thing, the folding top adds 457 lbs versus the coupe and the rear suspension has been revised too. The result is a car that’s still quick and easy to drive fast but lacks the handling edge of the G coupe and sedan.

Nowhere is this more apparent than at the test track. The convertible gets through the slalom at 65.9 mph – well off the 73 mph pace set by the last G37S coupe we tested. 0-60 is a few ticks slower as well.

Hardtop or not, this is still a convertible, so it lacks the vault-like feel of a coupe, even when the metal top is buttoned down in place.  You get quietness, weather-proofing and security with a convertible like this; you don’t get coupe-like handling.

Are these inherent sacrifices worth the thrill of wind swirling through the luxurious, leather lined cabin? Probably. Especially considering the fact that Infiniti expects just a many women as men will opt for this version of the G37.

One thing is certain, as hardtop convertibles go; the G37 is a good looking one. After it goes on sale this summer, we fully expect to see more than a few examples of the 2009 Infiniti G37 convertible cruising the streets of Miami, Malibu and other high-rent beach towns across the US.
