Infiniti FX45
What's special about it?
When the Infiniti FX45 crossover concept debuted at this year's Detroit Auto Show it seemed like déjà vu all over again. Anyone who saw the unveiling of the GMC Terracross, Nissan alpha T, Volvo Adventure, Jeep Willys and Audi Steppenwolf must have thought they'd seen the vehicle before. The FX45 and those concepts all feature the same blockish, industrial styling that is reminiscent of power tools, sci-fi robots and futuristic design. The FX45 is meant to bridge the gap between large, luxury sport sedans (like the Infiniti Q45) and SUVs such as the Infiniti QX4. It is equipped with a powerful 32-valve, 4.5-liter DOHC V8 that provides more than 300 horsepower and 300 foot-pounds of torque. It features a full load of performance and stability features, including: five-speed manu-matic transmission, stability control system (that automatically alters brake pressure and torque during over- and understeer), four-wheel independent suspension, 20-inch wheels and 285/50R20 tires, four-wheel disc brakes with ABS, electronic brake force distribution and brake assist. Inside, the FX45 has been given a 9.5-inch multifunction (audio, navigation, climate, Internet) LCD display, a rear game system, DVD video, water bottle cooler and four-zone climate control. Loaded with power, multiple control systems and luxury features, Infiniti refers to the FX45 concept as the "bionic cheetah." Because it looks like so many of the other crossover concept vehicles introduced in Detroit, we'll wait to see which one is actually produced before we dub any one the "cat's meow."
Why should you care?
If this is the way that sport-utility vehicle design is going, prepare for the brave new world. These are, however, concept vehicles, so it will be interesting to see what the automakers actually produce.
