"The EX35 is a leader in its class for state-of-the-art safety," said Institute President Adrian Lund. Lund noted that the EX35's standard electronic stability control helped to propel it to the top of its class.
To qualify for the award, a vehicle must earn the highest rating of "good" in the Institute's front, side and rear tests and be equipped with electronic stability control.
Infiniti's award came just a day after the 2008 Cadillac CTS won a similar prize from the Institute. The watchdog group noted that "the number of vehicles earning a Top Safety Pick is increasing." Last year, only 13 vehicles qualified for the awards. In 2008, the number of winners more than doubled to 34. The awards are given throughout the year as automakers introduce new models or make changes to old ones.
