2008 Infiniti EX35 Makes Pebble Beach Debut

PEBBLE BEACH, California — The latest entry in the Infiniti lineup, the rear-wheel-drive 2008 Infiniti EX35, broke cover on Thursday. It goes on sale in the U.S. in late December.

The EX35 should please fans of the Infiniti EX Concept, from which it is derived. The EX Concept debuted in the spring in New York.

Oddly enough, the EX35 bears more than a passing resemblance to the Korean-made 2007 Hyundai Elantra, especially looking at it from the front three-quarter view. Infiniti points out that the EX35's design cues include a double-arch grille, L-shaped headlights and what it calls a "dynamic arch" silhouette. Other exterior features include a high-mounted rear hatchback spoiler, chrome-finished dual exhaust tips, and optional roof rails and crossbars.

All four trim levels of the EX35 are equipped with the same 3.5-liter V6 engine found in the Infiniti G35 sedan. This EX35's V6 is rated at an estimated "290-plus" hp, says Infiniti. It is mated to a five-speed automatic transmission with manual mode.

Vehicle dynamic control with traction control is standard; intelligent cruise control with preview braking is optional. Other options include 17-inch seven-spoke aluminum alloy wheels or 18-inch eight-spoke aluminum alloy wheels.

The Infiniti EX35 also gets some optional high-tech goodies. The most noteworthy is the world debut of the "Around View Monitor," which uses four small cameras to give the driver a "top-down view" of the outside of the car while parking. It is also the first to get "Scratch Shield," a sophisticated new "self-healing" clearcoat paint that automatically fixes fine scratches, such as fingernail scratches under door handles, the company says.

The EX35's cabin features a "wave-inspired" layout with a "double-wave" instrument panel and white-and-violet gauges. Black lacquer trim is standard.

The Infiniti EX35 comes in four models: EX35 RWD with a cloth interior, EX35 AWD with a cloth interior, EX35 RWD Journey and EX35 AWD Journey. The Journey models include a power moonroof, leather-appointed seating surfaces, power-folding second-row seat, auto-dimming rearview mirror with electronic compass, HomeLink Universal Transceiver, a front and rear sonar system, and auto on/off headlights.

Prices have not yet been announced.

What this means to you: The hatchback companion to the G37 looks eerily like a Hyundai Elantra from several angles.
