DETROIT — The 2013 Hyundai Veloster Turbo, with a significant 63-horsepower boost over the base Veloster, made its world debut on Monday at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show.
The Veloster Turbo will go on sale in the summer.
Pricing has not been announced, but it will be more expensive than the base 2012 Veloster, which starts at $18,075, including a $775 destination charge.
The Veloster Turbo gets a 201-hp turbocharged 1.6-liter gasoline direct injection four-cylinder engine linked to either a six-speed manual transmission or six-speed automatic transmission. The base 2012 Veloster is equipped with a 138-hp 1.6-liter gasoline direct injection four-cylinder engine linked to a standard six-speed manual transmission.
While the EPA has yet to post official fuel-economy numbers for the Veloster Turbo, Hyundai said it will get an estimated 27 mpg in city driving and 38 mpg on the highway. The base 2012 Veloster with a six-speed manual transmission returns 28 mpg in city driving and 40 mpg on the highway, according to the EPA.
Hyundai said the Veloster Turbo targets the Volkswagen GTI, the Honda Civic Si and the Mini Cooper/Clubman S.
The Veloster Turbo will feature the Korean automaker's first exterior Matte Gray paint, along with 18-inch alloy wheels with chrome inserts, unique front fascia, foglights and ground effects. It also gets a sport-tuned engine intake and exhaust note and sport-tuned steering. The base Veloster's trapezoidal center exhaust has been replaced by two circular exhaust pipes.
The Veloster Turbo is slightly longer and wider than the base model, although it rides on the same 104.3-inch wheelbase.
The cabin gets leather seats with the word "Turbo" stitched into the seatbacks. Heated front seats are standard on the Turbo model.
Inside Line says: Hyundai addresses the complaint that the base Veloster is underpowered with the debut of the Veloster Turbo.

I really don't understand car builders now. I have an 08.5 Mazdaspeed3 built in Japan I got for $24K with 270HP Turbo. Now Hyundai is coming to market with this car and only offering 200HP but for the same price and nothing else to offer? I would think for a Korean car maker they would of upped the HP to 300HP to sell the car, otherwise it's a overpriced Ford Focus. Just my two cents worth.
Kskispeed I own a 2010 Mazdaspeed 3 mine was 22k I LOVE the power but I don't like paying close to 4bucks a gallon for gas the god awful clutch and crappy gas mileage. The Veloster turbo loaded at about 25k give or take with better features and lets not forget this car gets better city mileage than our cars do on the highway!! that's huge and with regular gas. So what if I don't get 260hp and cant hit 60 in 6 seconds. with the Veloster? If i wanted to drag race I would of bought a Camaro or a Mustang or hell an Impreza or if I could stomach the overpriced GTI but none of em can give me better gas mileage nor require premium.. so I would be happy with the Veloster turbo an even happier not having to pay for premium and fill up twice a week...my 2 cents.. wanna buy my speed 3 it's red!

Hell Kia Sportage already has the 2.0 Turbo ready to go for this car making 270HP, no R&D needed just tune it with another 20HP and way you go.... Or am I missing something?

Just fail. Why would you get this over Mazdaspeed3 or GTI? You're basically sacrificing everything just to have the veloster style, which is questionable to begin with."
I understand I'm a little late with this reply but I am a 2010 mazdaspeed owner I would gladly sacrifice a second or a second and a half to 60 for 38mpg and no premium gas! and the worse clutch in the compact car segment EVER! Don't get me wrong I love my speed 3 but that love is getting expensive very expensive.

djc1969 says- "This car is stupid, Period! it is going to be ...orty... but absolutely NOT sporty it's missing the s and p in sporty. It weighs in MORE than a civic SI...There is too many better options with other car manufacturers... and this is NOT opinion, it's fact!"
Actually, the Veloster weighs about 77 pounds LESS than the SI. It's fact!
^That's me, laughing mockingly at you.

This Car Only Has Two Problems:
1) Now That They Have Everyone's Attention, Loose The Frickin' 3rd Door, & Make 2 & 4 Door Hatch Models, That Way Everyone Gets What They Want.
2) Allow Optional Use Of The Color Coordinated Wheels, They Just Look Too Nice To Loose

By the way, those "Turbo" writings on the seats remind me of a certain more expensive turbo-charged car with a much longer heritage... hmmm I wonder which one.
At least they didn't put a "380GT" emblem on this one.
