    What Is It?

    2005 Hyundai Tucson

    What's Special About It?

Encouraged by the success of its Santa Fe midsize SUV, Hyundai brings a smaller 'ute to market. Called the Tucson, this new SUV will challenge segment stalwarts such as Honda's CR-V and Toyota's RAV4 by offering lots of standard features and a choice of four- or six-cylinder power.

The Tucson's styling follows in the tire tracks of the Santa Fe with its swept-back headlights and curving front fenders, although it thankfully doesn't have the "fish mouth" grille of its big brother. For the most part, it's more handsome, if not more conservative, than the Santa Fe.

The Tucson will boast a generous standard features list, with the base version offering class-exclusive side curtain airbags (in addition to seat-mounted side bags); air conditioning; power windows, locks and mirrors; eight-way (manual) adjustment for the driver seat; and a six-speaker stereo with CD player. Also standard on all Tucsons is Hyundai's 10-year/100,000-mile warranty.

Offered in three trim levels — GL, GLS and LX — the Tucson will be available with either front- or "on demand" four-wheel drive (that automatically apportions power to the wheels with the best grip). Motivation will come from either a 140-horsepower inline four (GL) matched to a choice of a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic, or, in the top two trims, a 2.7-liter V6 with 173 horses coupled to the automatic.

Scheduled to debut during this summer, the Tucson will range in price from around $17,000 for a GL two-wheeler to $22,000 for an LX 4WD.

    What's Edmunds' Take?

In spite of the compact SUV arena being crowded, the Tucson should, like sibling Santa Fe, draw buyers in with its abundance of standard features, aggressive pricing and encouraging warranty. — John DiPietro
