    What is it?
    2002 Hyundai Terracan

    What's special about it?
Unlike the smaller Santa Fe, which Hyundai designates as a crossover vehicle, the midsize Terracan is designed to offer genuine offroad ability. Terracan's "gentle but firm" ride is made possible by a double wishbone front suspension with a five-link rear axle setup. Heavy-duty coil springs and gas-filled shock absorbers offer consistent damping for passenger comfort.

Three engines are available on Hyundai's midsize SUV: a 2.5-liter diesel, a 2.9-liter TCI diesel and a 3.5-liter gas-powered V6. While there's no word on whether the Terracan will find its way over to the States, we suspect only the V6 will be available when and if the Terracan graces our fair land.

Terracan's styling is meant to be an expression of "elegance, strength and functionality." A large, body-color radiator grille with Jeep-esque vertical slats dominates the front end, while contrasting-color side cladding gives Terracan a distinctive, two-tone look.

Hyundai says that utmost attention was paid to Terracan's interior design to ensure ultimate comfort and ergonomic affability, with comfortable seating for four and a thoughtfully designed center stack. Visibility is another strong point in this SUV and it's enhanced by lofty seats and an expansive greenhouse.

Options on Terracan include auto-dimming rearview mirror, power-operated sunroof, eight-disc CD changer and keyless entry. Safety features include ABS, side-impact protection beams, limited-slip differential and heated side mirrors.

    Why should you care?
To be quite frank, we were wondering the same thing ourselves. With the already saturated existing midsize SUV market, it's hard to get too excited about a new offering from Hyundai. Then again, if this vehicle does make its way over to the U.S., it's sure to offer competitive pricing and an impressive warranty. —Erin Mahoney
