Hyundai's 2011 Super Bowl Ads Attempt To "Deprogram" U.S. Car Buyers

    Just the Facts:
    • Hyundai's 2011 Super Bowl advertising will focus on hypnotizing and deprogramming viewers who have been fooled by the compact cars of its competitors.
    • The tagline of the ads is "Snap Out of It."
    • Hyundai will feature three in-game commercials in its fourth consecutive year of Super Bowl advertising.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY, California — Hyundai apparently is taking its 2011 Super Bowl advertising cues from Vegas lounge acts and cures for victims of mind control. The Korean automaker released the three commercials on Wednesday and said they were designed to hypnotize and "deprogram" viewers who think "compact cars are good enough."

Hyundai will feature three in-game ads in its fourth consecutive year of Super Bowl advertising. It likened consumers to sheep in its Super Bowl preview advertising.

Hyundai's "Hypnotized" Super Bowl commercial mesmerizes viewers with windshield wipers slapping back and forth and car keys swinging in ignition switches. "Have we been hypnotized to believe compact cars are good enough?" the ad asks. "Snap out of it."

The "Deprogramming" ad "attempts to hypnotize 100 million viewers simultaneously by offering a kaleidoscope of graphics featuring compact car stereotypes," said Hyundai in a statement. "Snap out of it, man," intones Jeff Bridges, the Oscar-winning actor who serves as Hyundai spokesman.

Finally, "Anachronistic City" sells the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid by focusing on old-school and outdated technology, such as original bulky cell phones, record players and penny-farthings or high-wheel bicycles. Hyundai said "all (were) innovative in their time." The commercial is supposed to "convey that while the Sonata is not the first hybrid to the market, it is a sophisticated evolution of hybrid technology."

I am a huge fan of Hyundai.  I really do think that they are very economical cars.  I have never been disappointed in Hyundai or even the Superbowl commercials.  This will be my first year watching the Superbowl in HD and I am very excited, especially since everything I watch is crystal clear.  I work and subscribe to DISH Network and trust me when I say they have the best HD.  I can't wait to see what Superbowl 45 has to bring!  Go Packers!

I'm a proud Hyundai owner and this one won't be my last. I prefer small, economical cars, which is where US manufacturers have missed the boat, especially in this age of $3-4 gas. And now to their quality and great warranty, Hyundai is adding buff styling.

I agree, you guys.  Hyundai's numbers speak for themselves.  And with the Sonata now one of C/D's 10Best, it's hard to deny that they are making good, if not great, cars.  I'll just never buy one for the same reason I'll never buy a Bowtie.  Brand Loyalty.  Just like no matter what wins in a pony car shoot-out, Ford-aphiles will always choose the Mustang over the Camaro or Challenger.

I'm a proud Superbowl watching American who owns a new Ford F 150 as of 2/2/2011, and I think Hyundai's are really putting out some nice vehicles. Good for them!

Their sales are through the roof and with the new Elantra they will be planning more production facilities. They really have struck a cord with the US auto buyer.  Wonder if they are secretly planning to present the most efficient pickup truck in the US ?

So Hyundai is trying to de-program me with some "creative" programming. Thanks, but I'll think for myself. One unintended effect of the popularity of the Super Bowl and the brilliance of Apple's ads from the mid 80s is that the big game also heralds the silly season in advertising.

Hyundai, there are many good reasons to buy your vehicles. However, these stupid commercials add nothing. In trying to be hip, trendy, and seasonal, you instead create a "me too" image with your ads.

Real Americans know how to spell Camaro, which is assembled in Canada (as well as the Challenger).
