Hyundai Recalls 2006-'08 Sonatas To Fix Seat Cushions

WASHINGTON — Hyundai is recalling nearly 394,000 Sonata sedans from the 2006-'08 model years. The South Korean automaker says owners should check with their dealer if they notice that the front seat passenger-side airbag stays turned off even when an adult is in the seat.

"Misclassification of a small-stature adult as a child in the right front passenger seat may cause the right front airbag to not inflate in an accident that merits airbag deployment and may result in injury to the right front occupant," says the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the summary of the problem on its Web site.

Dealers will remove the right front seat cushion assembly and ship it to an evaluation and repair facility. The dealership will then repair or reprogram the seat cushion and occupant classification system. The recall is expected to start on May 26.

Owners can contact Hyundai at (800) 633-5151.

What this means to you: If you own one of the aforementioned Hyundai Sonatas, have your dealer check it out ASAP. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
