FOUNTAIN VALLEY, California — The 2011 Hyundai Sonata remains in the under-$20,000 sweet spot. Pricing for the redesigned sedan was announced on Monday. The 2011 Sonata GLS starts at $19,915, including a $720 destination charge, slotting it below the 2010 Toyota Camry and 2010 Honda Accord.

The base 2010 Camry, which is part of the Japanese automaker's massive throttle recall, starts at $20,145, including a $750 destination charge. The base 2010 Honda Accord LX starts at $21,765, including a $710 destination charge.

The most expensive model in the lineup is the 2011 Hyundai Sonata Limited with a navigation package, which tops out at $28,115, including shipping. The sporty 2011 Hyundai Sonata SE model starts at $23,315, including shipping.

Hyundai raised the price of the base Sonata by $495 over the outgoing 2010 model.

The base 2011 Sonata GLS is equipped with a 198-horsepower 2.4-liter inline-4 linked to a six-speed manual transmission. The "Popular Equipment package," which bundles 16-inch alloy wheels, a power driver seat, chrome interior door handles and other features, adds $750 to the bottom line. Options on the 2011 Sonata SE model include a $2,600 navigation and sunroof package.

Good to see plagiarism still alive and well at Hyundai .  It seems like they have some really cool looking concept cars, but when the time comes to build it, some exec. steps in and wants it to look like a Camry or Lexus.  It seems like the whole lineup is  a mangerie of fake brand name watches with Rolax marked instead of Rolex.  Although I get why they would do this,  its a sad thing to see.  Until they stand out as unique, no one will ever take it seriously, no matter how positive the critics spin it.  The brand has turned a 180 in terms of quality, but it all seems wasted.

If they were aiming for boring, they nailed it!

    @ Charlesb

Respectfully, I disagree.  That sounds like a very capable I-4 in the new sonata, and its common knowledge that most buyers opt for the 4 cylinder anyway to keep purchase price and fuel costs down.  And in this economy, I think that trend will probably grow.

I think this is a smart move by Hyundai.  And I think its a sharp looking car with an attractive interior.

No V-6 engine is a no-no in the United States.

Good for Hyundai, the improvements they have made to their product line in the past 10 years has been nothing short of amazing. This new Sonata is fantastic looking, and the interior blows away the cheap Camry. The Honda Accord has an excellent interior as far as material quality goes, but the center stack is an ergonomic mess which is a first for Honda. The Altima interior isn't bad, but the new Fusion is probably the only car to give this new Sonata a run for its money, both on exterior and interior looks.

I owned a 2009 Sonata Limited V6 and had a less than positive experience with the car (I posted about it here in the Sonata forums) and as many strides as Hyundai has made, I'm still leary of their quality and reliability. My 2009 Fit Sport on the other hand has been flawless, with not a single issue, squeak, rattle, or problem in the year I've owned it. Still, Hyundai is a company to watch, who along with Ford ironically have the most interesting, and dynamic portfolio of cars currently on the market. I'm not even a Mustang type of guy but that new 5.0 Mustang looks fantastic.
