- NTHSA is investigating the 2011 Hyundai Sonata for a possible steering problem.
- Over 16,000 Sonatas are included in the evaluation.
- Two complaints have been reported.
WASHINGTON — The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has opened an investigation into an estimated 16,300 2011 Hyundai Sonatas after reports of steering problems.
The investigation, which is formally called a preliminary evaluation, is sometimes the precursor to a recall.
"We will fully cooperate with the investigation and resolve any issues," said James P. Trainor, Hyundai Motor America spokesman, in a phone conversation late Tuesday with Inside Line. "We have received two complaints for different issues and have repaired the vehicles."
He said there were no injuries or accidents associated with the complaints.
NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigations said the complaints "allege either a separation of the intermediate steering shaft assembly upper universal joint resulting in a complete loss of steering capability and/or a cross-threaded pinch bolt that caused stripped-out threads and loosening, but not complete separation of the upper universal joint connection."
It said the vehicles were manufactured during the same month and had fewer than 600 miles of service at the time of the alleged incidents.
Hyundai recalled 5,893 2011 Sonata vehicles on February 24 to fix faulty door latches.
Inside Line says: If you own the aforementioned 2011 Sonata, be aware of the investigation. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent

Obviously I don't have enough information to know if this is anything truly newsworthy at this point, but I do think that it fortells the future. Ever since the Toyota debacle (and by debacle I mean the witchhunt and hyperventilation by the press and NHTSA), we've started seeing more and more scrutiny of any problem on a car. Basically, if a particular car model has at least two similar failures, it is no longer just statistically random occurences of parts failures, its a design or manufacturing defect according to the powers that be.
Fortunately, I think the NHTSA is going to run out of people and time chasing its tail really quickly and then things will return to a more rationale equilibrium.

All this because TWO COMPLAINTS have been reported.
Hyundai cant build enough of these cars and they are selling like hotcakes at a Weight Watchers convention and two complaints are causing a stir....

Maybe it's better to buy the second or third year of a new model !

No suprising those kinds of problems happens with Hyundai, at least it is quite frequently or even usuall here in Korea. And they never care of customers and never fix it.

With big success comes.... uh, recalls.
But the NHTSA has jumped on Hyundai for only 2 incidents? Hardly a major problem.
In the first statement "16,300 vehicles" stands out and will be imbedded into the minds of many Americans who don't read beyond the first sentence. They will proclaim to their friends (with Hyundais) that "There is a recall of 16,300 new Sonatas. Or maybe it was 163,000-- I can't remember, but it was a lot."
