Details were sparse, but John Krafcik, Hyundai's vice president for product development, confirmed that the Sonata hybrid is a so-called parallel hybrid that uses an advanced lithium-ion battery pack.
Hyundai says its first hybrid model should be launched by 2010, and will compete with such products as the Toyota Camry Hybrid.
Krafcik on Wednesday also said that Hyundai plans to sell 50,000 Genesis vehicles annually in the U.S. Of that number, 20,000 will be sedans and 30,000 will be coupes. His remarks came at the regional media drive here of the Genesis.
