    Just the Facts:
    • Hyundai is recalling 6,169 Santa Fes because a defective transmission may cause "loss of motive power, increasing the risk of a crash," according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
    • Hyundai dealers will replace the right-side output gear and intermediate shaft on the affected Santa Fes.
    • The recall is related to an earlier recall of 12,690 2011 Kia Sorentos for the same problem.

WASHINGTON — Hyundai is recalling 6,169 Santa Fes because a defective transmission may cause "loss of motive power, increasing the risk of a crash," according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"The intermediate shaft may suffer from noise and excessive wear due to a misalignment of the intermediate shaft with the right-side output gear," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "Continuing to drive the vehicle in this condition leads to the development of a whirring/whining noise and can eventually cause damage to the automatic transmission.

"Damage to the transmission may cause loss of motive power, increasing the risk of a crash."

The affected Santa Fes are two-wheel-drive models equipped with 2.4-liter four-cylinder engines and automatic transmissions.

In other documentation filed with the federal government, Hyundai said that the affected Santa Fes were installed with the same equipment as recently recalled 2011 Kia Sorentos. Kia recalled 12,690 Sorentos for the same problem.

Hyundai dealers will replace the right-side output gear and intermediate shaft on the affected Santa Fes. The recall is expected to begin in June. Owners can contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151.

Inside Line says: If you own the aforementioned Hyundai Santa Fe, be aware that a recall is in the works.

I have a 2010 Hyundai Santa Fe we bought it brand new and it has been in several times for a "transmission" issue (hard shifts from first into second). The dealer has done two "computer upgrades" and we are still having issues? In fact just took it in yesterday for them to fix the issue and on the way home today, WHAT A SURPRISE, this issue is still there. Can anyone tell me why Hyundai just doesn't just "belly up" and actually fix the issue? Oh and can someone tell me why they keep blowing smoke up my butt and telling me that it takes about a 100 miles for  the computer to to "figure it out"?? I am so upset

I am on my 2nd transmission.  I have never bought a bigger piece of junk in 50 years of driving than my 2010 Santa Fe.

Hmm.. oddly enough, this kind of restores some confidence in the new Kia Sorento and its first year design.
