    What Is It?
    Hyundai Portico Concept

    What's Special About It?
This is Hyundai's concept of the ultimate family vehicle. And like every crossover vehicle of the past few years, the Portico is, according to Hyundai, utterly unique and beyond classification. We could go over all the ways the Portico is similar to countless other crossovers on the market, but we'll stick to the features that are truly unique to this Hyundai concept.

Most notable among those features is the Portico's sliding center seat design that allows for multiple configurations of the evenly split first and second rows. Rather than cramming a third person in between the driver and front passenger, the Portico's middle seat can slide back independently of the outside seats to open up more room. Same goes for the second row as the middle section can move all the way back to the cargo area to keep things comfortable in the back row.

Getting six people into the Portico isn't a problem thanks to the absence of a center side pillar and wide front and rear doors that open in opposite directions. The feeling of spaciousness is further influenced by the Portico's panoramic roof that places large expanses of glass over both the first and second rows of seats.

Although the Portico is powered by a conventional V6 hooked to a six-speed transmission, it was also designed to accept a hybrid powertrain still under development at Hyundai. Utilizing two electric motors, one for the front wheels and the other for the rear wheels, Hyundai's system not only provides the efficiency of electric power it also adds the traction of all-wheel drive to the mix.

    What's Edmunds' Take?
With so many crossover vehicles already on the market, there are few features left that haven't been tried in one form or the other. Hyundai would be better off focusing on building a cleanly styled vehicle with the right price than worrying about hybrid drivetrains and a panoramic sunroof. — Ed Hellwig
