2008 Geneva Auto Show: Hyundai Matrix

GENEVA — Almost lost in the hoopla over the cutting-edge Hyundai HED-5 i-Mode concept, the Korean automaker's face-lifted Matrix made a quiet debut at the 2008 Geneva Auto Show.

Based on the home-market Lavita, the Matrix compact crossover is not sold in North America (where Toyota already has locked up the name on its own small crossover).

The original Matrix, introduced in 2002, was designed by Pininfarina. Now Hyundai's own design team has freshened the vehicle inside and out, with a more modern front end that includes new headlamps, grille, bumper, hood and fenders.

The vehicle's cabin has been updated as well, with new colors and fabrics. Engine choices include two gas and one diesel, available with a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic gearbox.

What this means to you: Still no plans to market this one in the States — even with a different name. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
