SEOUL, South Korea — Hyundai Motor plans to introduce a new hybrid electric vehicle on a dedicated platform, similar to Toyota with the Prius, in 2012, followed by a plug-in hybrid version in 2013. Both hybrids will be fitted with a lithium-polymer battery pack.
The Korean automaker also plans to offer a larger, more powerful version of the Tau gasoline direct-injection V8 in the new Equus and the face-lifted 2012 Genesis sedan, coupled with a new eight-speed automatic transmission. The 5.0-liter GDI engine makes 429 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque. There are no immediate plans to offer the big V8 in the Genesis coupe.
In other powertrain news:
- Hyundai is considering offering its 247-hp 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel in the U.S.-spec Veracruz, along with a selective catalytic reduction system to clean up the exhaust emissions.
- The company also expects to offer its 274-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine in the next-generation Santa Fe.
- The 2011 Sonata Hybrid is expected to achieve an EPA highway fuel economy rating of 40 mpg.
- Hyundai has tentative plans to begin selling a hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle in 2012 that resembles a slightly smaller version of the Mercedes-Benz R-Class.
