Hyundai Will Introduce Three New Small Cars in the Next 12 Months

    30 Ratings
    Just the Facts:
    • The front-wheel-drive Veloster coupe will make its 140 hp from a 1.6-liter four-cylinder.
    • The redesigned Elantra will debut at the 2010 Los Angeles Auto Show.
    • Elantra's power should come from a Theta II 2.0-liter inline-4.

PALO Alto, California — Hyundai has released auto show information and on-sale dates for its next three cars.

Inside Line has learned that the RB concept that debuted this week at the Moscow auto show will be rebadged as the new Accent for the U.S. market and will go on sale in mid-2011. Hyundai says the production RB will offer a choice of four-cylinder engines: a 1.6-liter making 122 horsepower and a 1.4-liter making 105 hp. We can expect similar, if not identical figures for the Accent.

The front-wheel-drive Veloster sport coupe, which we have seen before in various forms, will debut at the 2011 Detroit Auto Show. Expect it to be powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder with direct injection and output in the 140-hp range. We expect it to be on sale by the end of 2011.

Hyundai's redesigned Elantra will debut at the Los Angeles auto show. Previously released interior shots indicate that the small sedan will feature an LCD infotainment screen and a multifunction steering wheel. Power comes from Hyundai's latest Theta II 2.0-liter inline-4 engine. The Elantra is expected to go on sale by the end of this year.

"1.6  140HP is a jurasicc stat.  Honda ZC back at 89 made 140 form 1.6 liters. so what the deal. Is not surprise that Hyundai and Ford will rule the world because the Elantra is a cheap copy from a the Mondeo and Accent are a Fiesta Copy. By the way when i see the Veloster, i see a Shoe or a boot with four wheels."

You are most certainly entitled to your comments...as foolish as they are.  Why don't you take the next step and say the Sonata is a copy of the Fusion and the Genesis is a copy of the MKX etc..

What about rumors of an Elantra with 200hp from a 4-cyl turbo?  Who are they copying in that segment?  Truth is, Hyundai will be the first to offer twin-scroll turbos in the mid-size sedan segment alongside direct engine tech in its stable of vehicles. Also, Hyundai is the 1st company to complete omit a V6 option in the mid-size sedan category...there's actually genius in this move but you'll have to figure out for why for yourself.

As for your shoe/boot on wheels comment...there are places where you can get help for your condition.  Lots of support groups.  Look it up in the yellow pages.

By the way alex38, Accent started development 5 years ago.  Even when spyshots of the current gen Accent were just coming out.  They are already making plans for 2017 Accent.  A very smart company,  indeed.

Well, that's they stick to the plan on offering that 1.6 GDi and Hybrid Tech for Accent, the 2.0 GDI tech on Elantra and Veloster.  If they dont, they've allowed the Bean Counters to win yet again, and have stooped themselves down to "Everybody Else's" level.

Bean Counters=Brand Destroyers who take the company's highest aspiratons of a car, and then turn it into an overpriced soulless POS with: Fisher Price Plastics, performance and fuel economy that should have been obtained 5 years ago, a design that will age VERY quickly, and gives less people an incentive to go buy one when in fact its these very small cars people will need soon enough.

After seeing this Accent, and knowing about it for awhile it's unfathomable we didnt wait until 2012- etc.. to buy a small car.  Most of the other upcoming small car designs are ridiculous looking compared to Accent RB.  Accent is in the 21st Century, and the rest still refuse to accept change, and remain 20th century like.  Kind of like the growing battle between Gen Y and Baby Boomers.

=REFUSES TO BUY ACCENT WITHOUT DIRECT INJECTION OR A HYBRID LIKE WE WERE PROMISED.  AND IF I CANT BUY AN ACCENT DUE TO A DEFECT THEN I WILL REFUSE TO BUY ANOTHER HYUNDAI IN PROTEST.

YES, SELLING THESE CARS WITHOUT DIRECT INJECTION AND HYBRID TECH ARE DEFECTS.

The Elantra/Avante above looks sharp.  Hearing it might even have a 6-SPEED auto transmission but not confirmed; that would be impressive.

The kicker?  Left Lane News says the North American model is slated to receive a 200-horsepower turbocharged four-cylinder as the top powertrain offering. That would be unbelievable. If this is true, bye-bye Civic.  Bye-bye Corolla.  Bye-Bye Mazda3.

Okay, so I tend to be more loyal to the American/European makes. But truth be told, I've been extremely impressed with Hyundai's lineup starting from the Genesis Sedan/Coupe, Sante Fe, Tuscon. The new Sonata yet another homerun.  KIA also carving their own niche with their Sorento K7, K5 and Sportage...all really good looking cars imo..

Timing could not be better for the aggressive portfolio of small FUEL EFFICIENT cars with many consumers to focus on MPGs going forward.  One can say Hyundai got lucky, but I'd say they've made their own luck with smart decisions 3-5 years ago..
