LOS ANGELES — Hyundai rolled out its Genesis Forest Project at the 2008 Los Angeles Auto Show on Wednesday. The program aims to offset the entire first year of emissions for all 2009 Genesis sedans sold in the United States.
The green initiative is designed to aid in the conservation and reforestation of 3,000 acres of tropical forest in Tocantins, Brazil. As part of the CO2 offset program, Hyundai launched a new Web site, which includes tips on eco-friendly driving.
The program will provide an eco-tropical research center that will provide scholarships for advanced study of the region, which Hyundai says is classified as a "biodiversity hot spot."
The Korean automaker also will award three $35,000 grants to project developers to create new climate, community and biodiversity alliance projects. The applications for the grants are due January 16, 2009, and can be accessed at the above-mentioned Web site.
The carbon offsets will be retroactively applied to all 2009 Genesis sedan sales, which kicked off in June. The automaker said this program will offset more than 93,000 metric tons of CO2.
