LAS VEGAS — Hyundai is not ruling out a limited-run production version of the Rhys Millen Racing RM500 Genesis Coupe that bowed at the 2011 SEMA Show, the automaker tells Inside Line.
"All I can say is we're really excited at how cleanly and easily Rhys got the (V8) engine to fit," said Miles C. Johnson, a Hyundai Motor America spokesman in a phone conversation on Wednesday with Inside Line. "Anything is possible."
Johnson emphasized that a production version is "not a 'go' project yet." But he added: "We're here to gauge reaction and we know that for years enthusiasts have asked us when we're going to put a V8 in the Genesis Coupe."
The SEMA car cost between $80,000-$100,000, Johnson said when asked to ballpark the price.
The SEMA car gets Hyundai's 5.0-liter Tau V8 engine from the Genesis and Equus sedans. Modifications resulted in a 20-horsepower boost to 450 hp.
The all-black Genesis Coupe also gets a number of carbon-fiber pieces, including a front spoiler and rear side skirts. It also gets a custom RMR stainless exhaust with GReddy rear muffler and titanium tips, oil cooler and rear differential cooler. Many of the parts on the showcar will be sold by Rhys Millen Racing.
Rhys Millen will continue to work on the car after the SEMA show as it gets prepped for track-based events in the U.S., the automaker said.
Inside Line says: We say build it.

""This V8 would take it to the top of the food chain bye bye 5.0, SS, SRT8, 370z"
The SEMA car cost between $80,000-$100,000. That's GT-R/Corvette territory. Even if they managed to cut the cost down to $50,000, it still going not going to be at the top of the pecking order. It would have to be in the mid $30k's, which I don't see happening. By the way, turbocharge or supercharge any of the above & bye bye Hyundai. "
This is a one off custom car for SEMA. Im sure the production model (if they choose to make it) wont have those peformance rims, those huge brakes, and all that custom carbon fiber. From a base non R Spec Genesis sedan 3.8 its a $12K price hike to a Genesis sedan 5.0 R Spec. I would assume It would be that much or less of a increase of price to go from a $26K Genesis Coupe 3.8 R Spec to a (hypothetical) Genesis Coupe 5.0 R Spec so ~ $38. At least that would be my best guess.

The Genesis coupe is so heavy it NEEDS a V8 to keep up. It really is more of a Scion tC competitor......"
The Genesis Coupe is in no way a tC competitor. Everything about them is different, and I won't bother going through each obvious detail. Oh, and if the GC needs a V8, I guess the 370Z does too?
Really now? "They don't believe in themselves"? They were the first to bring out warranties that surpasses average vehicle ownership periods and if they didn't believe in themselves, why would they market the luxury offerings under the Hyundai marque? To set themselves up for failure?
The FACT is, the business case wasn't there when the Genesis was unveiled after the GFC and they've outlined the high financial burdens it will place on the company on numerous occasions. Personally, I'd rather that money being invested into developing better vehicles in the future, rather than making a fancy looking badge and dealership with fake smiles and hospitality. To each his own I guess. And yes, I absolutely loathe my BMW dealership and the incompetency of their service department, which wouldn't have to be an issue had my car been reliable.

And BD1 has the GALL to talk about half-@ssed luxury models when Toyota Plus has the ES, HS, CT and RX - all of which share platforms and drivetrains w/ either the Camry or Prius. lol
At least Hyundai's offerings are all on a dedicated RWD platform.

This V8 would take it to the top of the food chain bye bye 5.0, SS, SRT8, 370z. Not to mention it would spread the cost of R&D of that engine to another model. I hope they make it, even if its only a limited production run.

@blackdynamite1
Yeah, we've all heard your typical lame diatribe about "ignorance" (which is really funny considering that you are the one who is full of it).
"And V8s are passe, except for sports cars." - So why doesn't have Toyota have the "maracas" to build one, all we are going to get is the underpowered FR-S.
And yeah, V8s sure are "passe" - I don't see BMW dropping the M5 or Mercedes the AMG E 63 anytime soon. Nor for that matter, Toyota Plus dropping the V8 from the LS460.

"The Genesis coupe is so heavy it NEEDS a V8 to keep up. It really is more of a Scion tC competitor......
The Scion FRS will be faster than the Genesis Coupe 2.0, so why would it need a V8?"
- The GenCoupe has actual real seats that most adults can use. The FR-S' rear seats are for kids only.
Sciont tC competitor? The tC will struggle against the Veloster turbo.
As for the GenCoupe, it'll get the updated 2.0T pushing close to 280HP and the DGI V6 pushing close to 340HP - so uhm, no - the FR-S won't be a competitor (too slow).

"Hyundai can't read the market with a survey map, so they have half-@$$ luxury sedans floating around nobody buys, stupid coupes with not enough power, but cost MORE than the competition, and they don't believe in themselves, and it shows."
- "Half-@ssed" like what Toyota engineers admitted about the outgoing GS?
And for being "half-@ssed", the Genesis and Equus sedans have been outselling the GS and LS from Toyota Plus - so what does that make the GS and LS (a quarter--@ssed)?
The new Kia K9 makes the already ugly new GS look even uglier and the next gen Genesis sedan is due to launch in 2013, so Toyota Plus doesn't have much time on their hands to increase sales from the current sales joke that is the GS (266 for October - that's getting to Acural RL terriority - lol!).
- Now that we've gotten your lame "ignorance" diatribe, should we expect your even more lame "mental retard" attacks or your childish "mother" attacks for which you are known for?

I would totally agree with you if you were Ferrari/Lambo fan or even German car enthusiast.
But comming from the biggest Toyota troll? No thanks.

Your ignorance is crisp and clean, with no aftertaste......
Hyundai doesn't have the guts to build a luxury marque
And V8s are passe, except for sports cars
MPG is needed for CAFE regulations

Evidently Hyundai has more "maracas" than Toyota - which doesn't have a V8-powered coupe, much less a V6-powered coupe.
And oh, Toyota Plus doesn't have the "maracas" to stick a V8 in the new GS.
