ARLINGTON, Virginia — The 2011 Hyundai Equus qualifies as a Top Safety Pick in the large-car category, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
The Equus sedan, the flagship model of Korean automaker Hyundai, has not yet been rated under the new, more rigorous five-star safety rating system of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, however.
The IIHS said on Thursday that it named the Equus to the prestigious safety roll call because it is rated well for front, side, rollover and rear crash protection and it has electronic stability control.
The Equus is one of 15 large cars that have been named 2011 Top Safety Picks. It is the second Hyundai in the large-car category to earn the designation. The 2011 Hyundai Genesis is also a Top Safety Pick.
The Equus joins such large cars as the Buick LaCrosse, BMW 5 Series, Cadillac CTS sedan, Ford Taurus and Toyota Avalon in the Top Safety Pick category.
Inside Line says: Kudos to the Hyundai Equus for its achievement. Now we wait and see what the feds have to say about it from a safety standpoint. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent

As a car junky I love to look at cars. When I was in the market to replace my 2004 Acura TL with 32K mi I took a day to look at all the luxury brands I was interested in.(Mercedes, BMW, Lexus, Infinity, Acura, Audi, all midsize) There was an Hyundai dealership next door to BMW dealershipn so I thought I would walkover and take a look. I was blown away by the 2011 Genesis V8, for comparable features and quality of materials in the previously referenced vehicles it would have been at least 25k more and look at the reliability scores , I was totally sold. I purchased a 2011 Genesis V8 Black/Saddle for $37,500, no trade- in, no financing, no after market warranties,no hidden costs, only add on tax and license. I was also totally dismayed by the quality of some of the materials in the BMW 530-Dakota Leather-Ha. The leather in my 2010 Sequoia is better and it's not that great. I'm in the market to replace my 2007 MDX 70k mi and I only wish they had a luxury model SUV. I've looked at the Veracruz and it more comparable to a Highlander. Does any one know if they are planning a luxury midsize SUV as they did with Genesis in the auto market. Thanks, Wayne Melquist

I guess people who live in trailer parks, have bad credit, and rent at the airport, care about safety too.

I remember a interview Anita Lienert did about six years ago with a Kia official who stated that the Korean cars were going to take safety title away from Volvo. I thought the guy was nuts at the time. But it looks like he followed through on his vow.
