CHICAGO — Hyundai expanded its popular small-car lineup this week, officially unveiling the 2013 Elantra coupe at the 2012 Chicago Auto Show.
Longer and wider than Honda's Civic coupe, the Elantra coupe is powered by the same 148-horsepower 1.8-liter "Nu" Dual Continuously Variable Valve Timing (D-CVVT) engine found in the Elantra sedan. The four-cylinder is mated to either a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.
Fuel economy for the manual setup is rated at an estimated 29 mpg/city and 40 mpg/highway. Hyundai notes the highway figure is 11 percent more efficient than a manual-equipped Civic coupe.
Due in showrooms this spring, the Elantra will be available in base GS or sporty SE trim. Six airbags, and stability and traction control, as well as a braking package that includes ABS with brake assist and electronic brakeforce distribution comes standard. The GS is equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels, and the SE upgrades to 17-inchers wrapped with P215/45R17 tires.
Electronic push-button start and Bluetooth are standard on both trims, while the SE has the option of adding a 7-inch touchscreen navigation system with rearview camera and iPod/USB inputs.
Inside Line says: The 2012 Elantra sedan was already named North American Car of the Year. The addition of a coupe to the model line just confirms that Hyundai's making the right choices with the redesigned Elantra lineup.

So, I've skimmed the comments - and WOW! Honda this, your this kinda driver that. I'm looking forward to the release of the coupe - call me trendy or a wannabe - whatever! I'm a mom on a tight budget, need something that suits my needs and fuel efficient. I've run the gammet of cars from 4 doors, minivans, suvs and mustangs. Kids are out of the house and I can't wait to dump my ford escape - that was bad judgement on my part. I used to be a die hard Ford girl - HA, not after buying the escape.
Don't be so harsh on your comments - women read the blogs and you just might offend many! Don't catagorize us or anyone for that fact, as "trendy, or don't care what we drive" it's the opposite. We are wanting the best value for the buck. Would I love a BMW- yup, can I afford it, nope. And don't tell me I'd be able if I were educated - guess what, I am along with holding down a full time job.
"Hyundai/Kia and Toyotas are cars for people that simply don't like cars or driving." Really??? Gimme a break!
and hooklyn - get off your high horse - not everything is a stereotype or polictical - you just turn it in to that.
Now I'm off my soapbox and YES, waiting for the elantra coupe release!

I rented the Elantra last year and keep it for a weekend. I was able to get up to 41 MPG highway. It was mostly highway so I couldn't get a good read for the city mileage. The thing is that you have to drive it like you want to save gas. You're not going to get the best mileage if you think all you have to do is put it in D and pull off.

Don't believe the MPG hype. I have own a '11 Elantra. Love the car. The gas mileage is nowhere near what Hyundai claims. Highway driving I can barley scratch 30 mpg. In the city, maybe 22, 23.

what's Hyundai's obsession with spray painting so much of the interior plastics silver. just awful

@ wizard "And that interior looks like a 1990 Corolla.."
Dude, you have absolutely no idea what your talking about.. Best to take a break from trolling for a bit before you make a bigger fool of yourself. I owned a '90s Corolla and the interior of any current gen Hyundai is SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER than any interior from a Toyota of the same class, let alone a Toyota of the 90's.
Almost seems like putting Toyota and Hyundai in the same sentence these days is an insult to...Hyundai.

Jesus, that's really an ugly looking rendition of the Civic.
Hyundai too the clean look of the past Civic Coupe,
Added way too many body lines and sculptures.
Gave it a cheaped out Rear Suspension from a Stage Coach
And that interior looks like a 1990 Corolla.

Another numbers engineered 40mpg hwy rating so they can use it in their ads and completely ignore city and combined ratings.
Look at Fuelly(.)com for elantra and veloster, then compare to civic and cr-z. The difference is Honda is much closer (or above) its ratings and Hyundai is much lower.

@hooklyn
Then WTF was he thinking of? Even the context of what he said is clear. "Ghetto dweller's" in the same frame of mind as Al Sharpton talking about Whitey? Even if you think he doesn't think this way, just to assume others think this way because they're of a certain group is prejudice. But it's just 2 racist tearms.....ok well, thanks for pulling out the derogatory racist term score card. I guess when you put it that way... Seriously dude.
Chances are anyone buying a $2k to $4k car would most likely be buying an old, beat up piece. Honda's and Toyota's are no different. In fact, they may be even older and have more miles because of their resale value. At that point; what is the point?

This is a nice looking coupe especially in red but what hyundai needs to do is freaking refine the powetrain in this car and the sonata becuase this car at idle the engine either sounds like a cheap wind up toy or a broken down lawn mower. I dont care what price class a car is the engine in this hyundai should not have a crappy idol quality to it especially from hyundai becuase they are suppose to up there in quality and such
