- Hyundai released the first photo of its new 2011 Avante's interior.
- The Avante is known as the Elantra in the U.S.
- 2011 Hyundai Elantra will debut in November at the L.A. auto show.
SEOUL, South Korea — Hyundai has spruced up the redesigned 2011 Elantra with a new cabin that features a large LCD infotainment screen, a multifunction steering wheel and a more sophisticated look. The details were revealed in the first official interior shot of the 2011 Hyundai Avante (badged as Elantra in the U.S.) released on Wednesday by the automaker ahead of the car's August debut in the home market.
Inside Line asked Hyundai Motor America spokesman Dan Bedore if the U.S. version of the Elantra will look the same, in an e-mailed query on Thursday.
"We can't comment on the next Elantra for the U.S. market yet but your assumptions are safe," Bedore wrote. "Our car comes in January 2011. Expect to see the 2011 Hyundai Elantra debut at the [2010] Los Angeles Auto Show."
Hyundai Motor said the cabin uses a new design concept called "Wind Craft." It said the new interior "projects a dynamic and futuristic image that is aimed at the younger generation," in a statement.
"The silver garnish that starts from the crash pad and leads to the console features a windblown shape that exudes an overall refined and dynamic image," it said. "High-glossy black and metallic colors add more futuristic and high-tech looks."
The single image also shows aluminum pedals and a multifunction steering wheel.
Inside Line says: If the interior shot is any indication, Hyundai has kicked it up a notch with the 2011 Elantra. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent

That lower middle console area reminds me of a urinal I stood in front of today...and after seeing this I feel like doing the same to it...
My,my how very clever you are. I hope not more than 2 seconds were spent on that witty comment.

The new Elantra is beautiful, inside and out....go back in your ugly, overwrought, jetson-styled, and antiquated engined CIVIC. Hyundai/Kia is the new leader in style/quality/technology. Get used to it.

Hyundai is going to lose a lot of Elantra sales when corn-fed Amricans try to get comfortable behing the wheel and find their right leg cramped by that bulbous mass around the shifter.
Otherwise, the interior is certainly a lot more upscale than the current Elantra (which is more stylish than most of its competition.)
And the interior will appeal to the same people who like the similar looking exterior. Love it or not, Hyundai is desilgning interiors that reflect the styling of the exterior-- something you don't ordinarily see.
By 2011, a lot of new sexy-looking compact cars will be emerging, so I think the Elantra will hit these shores (or from wherever it is made) at just the right time.

I predict taller drivers with splaying legs will despise that outward-swooping dash. When Hyundai dropped the new Genesis models, I thought they were really turning it around. But their styling is getting too over-wrought, very quickly... inside and out.

I understand that the materials here have an eye on price and I don't really have a problem with that. I drive a G8 and there are corners cut in the interior there as well. I'm not a big fan of the concept here of make it as swoopy as possible and dress it up with silver buttons. It's all just a bit over done and cheesy looking in the same fashion that one of those crappy all-in-1 stereo systems they sell at Best Buy.
But I guess that is the target they are shooting for, and right now they are doing a great job of it.
