FOUNTAIN VALLEY, California — With the recession clearly still top of mind, Hyundai has rolled out a low-price 2010 Accent Blue model. The Accent Blue with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder and five-speed manual transmission starts at $10,690, including a $720 destination charge.

"The 'Blue' model will be priced lower than any other Accent model," said Hyundai Motor America in a statement.

Hyundai appears to be jockeying for the title of cheapest car in America with the Accent Blue. The cheapest 2009 Nissan Versa sedan without air-conditioning starts at $10,710, including a $720 destination charge. The Versa comes in two body styles: a five-door hatchback and a four-door sedan, but no three-door hatch.

The Accent Blue also slots in well below the cheapest 2010 Chevrolet Aveo LS in five-door hatchback configuration. That domestic model starts at $12,685, including a $720 destination charge.

Standard equipment on the Accent Blue includes rack-and-pinion power steering, side and head curtain airbags, variable intermittent windshield wipers, six-way adjustable driver seat, rear spoiler and rear window defroster. Hyundai said the Accent Blue gets an estimated 27 mpg in city driving and 36 mpg on the highway.
