2008 Paris Auto Show Preview: Hyundai Unveils a Clean Diesel for Europe

SEOUL, South Korea — Hyundai has one more novelty in store for the 2008 Paris Auto Show: a new "clean" diesel code-named U2 that is targeted for installation in the new India-built i20 compact that goes on sale later this year in Europe.

Developed by Hyundai's Powertrain R&D Center, the U2 four-cylinder turbodiesel displaces 1.6 liters and employs a common-rail, direct-injection system. Designed primarily for use in smaller passenger vehicles such as the i20, the new diesel delivers fuel economy of up to 50 mpg, with reduced CO2 emissions of only 125 g/km.

Hyundai said the i20, which is to be assembled in Chennai, will be the first model to use the clean diesel.

What this means to you: Hyundai continues to push to the forefront of Europe's small-car competitors. — Hoseok Park, Correspondent
