Hummer H2
What's special about it?
Hummers have been sold in a number of varieties of a single, decidedly utilitarian flavor since their introduction to the public. Fresh from the U.S. armed forces to your local freeways, courtesy of Ah-nold and his I've-never-been-a-soldier-but-I-play-one-on-TV image, Hummer debuted in 1992. As the company states, "it is the most authentic SUV." AM General, in partnership with General Motors for the production of the H2, introduced it as a concept vehicle but pretty much stated that this is what the production version will look like. The H2 has clean surfaces, using fewer exposed rivets and the entire body exhibits a simpler, more rounded shape than its H1 big brother. You and your friends sitting in the four leather bucket seats (a middle rear jump seat provides five-passenger capacity) can frighten other motorists with the 6.0-liter Vortec V8 hooked to an automatic transmission. With Autotrac four-wheel-drive, and perched upon 35-inch Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tires mounted to 19-inch three-piece aluminum wheels, the H2 won't have any trouble rock-hopping. An independent double-wishbone suspension, exposed to display strength of design and components, provides a smoother and more stable ride than you might expect from a Hummer. Substantial skidplates protect the undercarriage, while a Night Vision system lets you hunt down your next meal, which you can store in the three-tiered cargo area with illuminated sub-floor storage. You can touch base with the Pentagon through hands-free Internet access or using the integrated laptop docking station. A power canvas sunroof which opens over both rows of seats, a DVD video player and a thumping Monsoon audio system are appreciated creature comforts, but GM contends that the H2 retains all of the traditional utility and capability of the Hummer we know and love, offering as proof a standard winch and brush guard. It's still the beast but in civilized garb.
Why should I care?
This is the first Hummer to be designed exclusively for the civilian consumer market. It displays more refinement, and family-functionality (and color!), in case you don't want to look like you just returned from the "Mother of all Wars." As can be deduced by the numerical designation, more progeny of the Hummer family will be forthcoming. Look for the 2002 H2 to arrive in dealer showrooms in the summer of 2001.
