Looking exactly like the concept that was introduced over two years ago, the production H2 SUT features a collapsible Midgate that allows the small utility bed to open up to accept larger cargo when passenger capacity isn't a priority. | September 15, 2009

    What Is It?
    2004 Hummer H2 SUT

    What's Special About It?
This variation on the standard H2 uses a little bit of Chevrolet know-how to solve the problem of the standard model's miniscule cargo space. First, the rear cargo area was opened up by lopping off the roof, creating a small trucklike utility bed. Then a collapsible Midgate similar to that found in the Avalanche pickup was installed to allow the passenger compartment to become part of the cargo area when even more room is needed. The result is an H2 that's not only more practical, but one that will be more fun to drive thanks to the open air feel provided by the new setup. The rest of the SUT is identical to the standard H2 with plenty of V8 power and an industrial style that's both appealing and a bit cheesy at the same time.

    Why Should You Care?
Unlike the standard model, the SUT doesn't force you to give up the basic appeal of SUVs — that being their inherent practicality — in exchange for the H2's unique style. Set to go on sale next spring, expect this to be yet another hit for the fledgling Hummer brand. — Ed Hellwig
