TORRANCE, California — The redesigned 2009 Honda Pilot LX will be priced starting at $28,230, the same starting point as its predecessor, the company said, but a fully equipped, range-topping Pilot Touring will cost nearly $40,000. The '09 Pilot goes on sale officially on Wednesday, May 22.

The front-wheel-drive Pilot EX will start at $31,030, up $650 from the '08 model; the Pilot EX-L is priced from $34,230, up $1,550. All-wheel-drive versions will add from $1,530 to $1,600 to the sticker prices, depending on model.

A new top-of-the-line Pilot Touring model carries a sticker of $37,430 for the front-wheel-drive edition and $39,030 for the all-wheel-drive model.

The second-generation Pilot gets a more powerful 250-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 engine with Honda's variable cylinder management system, as well as new standard equipment. The Pilot Touring gets standard leather upholstery, navigation system and power tailgate, among other features.

What this means to you: Honda is making a convincing case with the new Pilot, that luxury and fuel efficiency can go hand in glove. — Paul Lienert, Correspondent
