Honda Kicks off Production of 2009 Pilot in "Sweet Home Alabama"

LINCOLN, Alabama — Honda celebrated a milestone on April 15, when the first 2009 Pilot, which is bound for showrooms on May 22, rolled off the assembly line here.

"Today we mark a significant milestone: the launch of an all-new Pilot and built only in sweet home Alabama," said Hiroshi Sasamoto, president and CEO of Honda's Alabama operations.

The plant will serve as the only global production source for the Pilot and Honda Odyssey minivan. Early next year, Honda said it will add a third model to its production lineup, the Ridgeline pickup. The plant also produces V6 engines for the Pilot and Odyssey. Honda reports that annual production capacity at the plant is now 300,000 vehicles and V6 engines.

What this means to you: A happy moment for U.S. manufacturing in the midst of what has been a rather bleak year. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
