WASHINGTON — Honda is recalling 310,773 2009-'11 Pilots to fix defective seatbelts that may detach from the anchor webbing in a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
"There is a possibility that the stitching that secures the end of the driver and front passenger lap section of the seatbelt may be incomplete or missing," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "If the stitching is incomplete or missing, the seatbelt may detach from the anchor webbing, increasing the risk of personal injury in a crash."
Honda said no injuries or deaths have been reported related to the defect.
In other documentation filed with the federal government, Honda explained that part of the problem with the seatbelts was revealed "in tests and video evidence." It attributed the problem in part to "an inexperienced sewing machine operator's failure to detect that the top spool had run out of thread."
Honda dealers will inspect the driver and front passenger seatbelts and, if necessary, replace them. The recall is expected to begin on October 3.
Owners can contact Honda at (800) 999-1009.
