WASHINGTON — Honda is recalling 21,776 of its 2005 Honda Odyssey Touring minivans with a power-operated rear liftgate because its struts could wear prematurely, resulting in the liftgate's closing unexpectedly, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

"The power liftgate gas struts may deteriorate unexpectedly early," said NHTSA in its recalls summary of the problem. "Struts that have worn out prematurely may fail to hold the power liftgate in the fully open position, causing the power liftgate to close unexpectedly. Injury may result from a power liftgate closing unexpectedly when a person is within the closing path of the liftgate."

Honda dealers will inspect the gas liftgate struts and replace them for free. The recall is expected to begin in March. Honda owners can contact the automaker at (800) 999-1009.

Inside Line says: If you own the aforementioned Honda Odyssey minivan, have it checked out by your dealer ASAP. In the meantime, watch your head. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent

My 2009 Odyssey touring that I purchased in Oct. 2008 had the struts failed maybe 5 to 6 months ago.  I had to yell at my wife not to open the rear gate because I'm sure if she had she would have been injured.

Well since these are far from the first times that either Toyota or Honda have had recalls, I don't think any of these events qualify as once in a lifetime. One might be able able to argue that Toyota and Honda have had fewer calls than some other companies, but going further than that simply doesn't ring true.

Recalls from companies like Toyota and  Honda are making big heaadlines. The reason is, this is something very unusual and once in a life time thing, on the contrary if it is FORD or GM it is very usual and everyday thing since recalls are part and parcel of those companies.

Very true neokaitiger.  There was a local news report (can't remember what city) on youtube shedding light on the Civic Si's transmission problem.  Even after that report, still no recall on Honda's 6-speed manual transmissions.  Now would be the perfect time, Honda/Acura!

I made a comment about my Honda Odyssey's transmission a month a go.  It had failed in the first year I owned it.  Another post said I was fabricating it.  Well?  were are you now naysayer?  It looks like Honda still cant build a transmission to save itself.  And others are here to prove it.

I'll 2nd the comment about grinding in Honda's new 6 speed transmissions. Not only do the Acura RSX's have a grinding issue, but Honda's own Si's have the same problem. (they share the same powertrain and cable shift system)

There have been recalls on just about every car in production. Right now the media likes to highlight stuff that should have been easier to find.

In this age of massive recalls, when is Honda/Acura going to address the 2nd gear grind and 3rd gear pop-out of their 6-speed manual transmissions found in the 2002-2006 RSX Type S?  I have been denied repair twice by Acura of Orange Park in Jacksonville, FL.

The interesting thing is I have a 2008 Odyssey Touring purchased March 2008 and the struts failed first week of January 2010 so I had them replaced under warranty.
