Japan: Honda Insight Gets Number-One Overall Sales Slot in April

TOKYO — Take that, Prius! Honda's new Insight gas-electric hybrid has taken the number-one spot in vehicle sales in Japan for April with 10,481 units sold. This marks the first time a hybrid vehicle has been the top seller.

The car is popularly priced, starting at just over $19,000, and went on sale in Japan in February. The Insight knocked aside the Honda Fit, which had been the best-selling car for the previous four consecutive months, giving Honda the two top slots for the first time. The sales list does not include minicars.

The Toyota Prius was number 21 on the sales list, but the comparison is not quite fair considering that Toyota is about to launch a third-generation Prius next month. Toyota said earlier this year that it intends to bring out a sub-Prius model that would be priced to compete against the Insight. Meanwhile, the third-generation Prius is expected to get a price adjustment to make it more attractive versus the new Insight.

Inside Line says: What will be really interesting will be the June sales figures, when the new Prius and the Insight can go head to head. — Laura Sky Brown, Correspondent
