Honda Sets the Pace With FCX Clarity Fuel Cell Car

    0 Ratings
TOKYO — Honda on Wednesday rolled out its FCX Clarity fuel cell pace car and said it will serve as the official car of the 2008 Indy Japan event starting April 17. Automakers around the globe are showing off their green conscience on the track this year with such offerings as a Chevrolet Corvette Z06 E85 that runs on ethanol.

GM announced this week that the Corvette Z06 E85 will serve as one of its two pace cars at the Indianapolis 500. Honda's announcement is unusual in that hydrogen and IndyCar racing seem like the ultimate automotive oxymoron.

The FCX Clarity runs on hydrogen and emits only water, making it one of the most environmentally friendly vehicles on the planet. Honda says the FCX Clarity is "scheduled for release in the U.S. in the summer and in Japan in the autumn of the year."

The FCX Clarity will serve as a pace car at the start of the 2008 IRL IndyCar Series' third race.

What this means to you: If you haven't figured this out already, it's all about environmental one-upmanship at the track these days. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
