    Just the Facts:
    • Honda is planning to offer a turbocharged engine option in late 2011 in its CR-Z hybrid coupe.
    • The forced-induction 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine may be offered in two variants, including a 200-horsepower edition for the new CR-Z Type R.

TOKYO — Honda is planning to offer a turbocharged engine option in late 2011 in its CR-Z hybrid coupe. The engine, a forced-induction 1.6-liter four-cylinder, may be offered in two variants, including a 200-horsepower edition that could be earmarked for the new CR-Z Type R.

According to Britain's Autocar, Honda wants to broaden the appeal of the CR-Z and thinks a performance version could have considerable appeal, especially in export markets such as the U.S. and the U.K.

The CR-Z recently was named Japan's Car of the Year, but sales in the home market already have begun to slow, Autocar said.

At the recent SEMA show in Las Vegas, Honda displayed a number of performance-oriented versions of the car, including one fitted with Mugen accessories and two modified by Honda Performance Development. The HPD cars, dubbed the CR-Z Hybrid R and CR-Z Racer, each featured a turbocharger and upgraded IMA hybrid system, delivering a combined 200 hp and 175 pound-feet of torque.

Please...no back seat!  There's plenty of other choices for 4-5 seaters.  These cars are not meant to be practical.  Turbo/Super enthusiast version, Yah!

the only typeR we ever got was the Integra R from about 1998. More likely will be a 1.5 Turbo or 1.6 Turbo without hybrid batteries ......hopefully w/ direct injection, LSD , and under 24k. The Si tag would be used not Type R. 160 hp not 200 is the more likely version we would get. This would compete with the Hyundai Veloster /Tiburon replacement.

It's about time they added some go to the CR-Z!

When I first saw the CR-Z I thought it looked sharp and I liked the styling nods to the old CRX.  Then I read "hybrid" and saw the weak performance figures.  My heart sank.  So I wrote this thing off as all show and no go.  Just a two door Insight.  Another example of Honda giving the finger to performance enthusiasts.

Now it seems there may be some hope for performance enthusiasts...  Honda needs more performance cars in its current line-up.  Coming out with a high performance version of the CRZ would be a step in the right direction.

Hey Honda,  now how about getting to work on a new NSX, S2000, Integra, or Prelude!

It's gonna be a 1.6L turbo, without the hybrid system.

    @ ed124c

I am 99% sure that it will not be a hybrid turbo engine... to complex, expensive, and heavy. The electric motor is not needed in a car as small and light as the CRZ, what they really should do is put a diesel in this thing but I will take the turbo for now. I'm not sure if Honda would put the rear seats back in, the old CRX and Insight didn't have them but I guess if people give them enough feedback they might. We can only hope!

I am confused by the article and the comments.

Will the Turbo still have the hybrid crap attached to it, or will it be a nice updated CR-X with just a gas motor?

    Can someone authoritatively answer this?

And please, please Honda-- install the rear seats.  As small and as uncomfortable as they probably will be, they could be a real bonus for semi-emergencies when you need to cram a kid or two into the back.  But make them fold down to form a nice flat cargo area for couples on a weekend, or even longer, vacation.

Too much to ask for?  Hopefully not.

OMG. Thank you Honda. You finally are going to build something to appeal to the honda loyalist that were beginning to wonder what the hell happened to you... Just make sure the Type R actually comes to the US. I'm thinking it will, I would rather it be called the Type R but if its called the Si with the same powertrain as the Type R in other markets that is okay as well. I'm hoping if its a 1.6L Turbo it will get the similar gas mileage as the current CRZ 6MT now... 27/35 would be great (even on premium) for a motor pushing out 200 hp and with only 2600 lbs to move around. Hopefully it will be good for 0-60 times in the sub 6 sec range especially if that were the specs it would be carrying 13 lbs/per hp. I can't wait for this model to come out, I think I just found my next car to replace my 10 year old Accord next year. I would gladly pay $25 grand for the Type R too. Don't ruin your chance to please the faithful Honda!
