WASHINGTON — Federal regulators are investigating an estimated 288,000 2002-'04 Honda CR-Vs for faulty headlights.
"The Office of Defects Investigations has received 12 reports from consumers of the subject vehicles alleging the low-beam headlights stopped working simultaneously," said NHTSA in its defect investigations summary. "Several of the complaints report the headlight switch and its wiring harness connector required replacement to repair the low beam headlight circuit. It was also reported the switch and connector had become damaged by overheating/melting."
American Honda said it is aware that NHTSA has opened a preliminary evaluation regarding the aforementioned CR-Vs. Such a move is sometimes the precursor to a recall.
"Honda will cooperate with NHTSA until this matter is resolved," said Chuck Schifsky, American Honda spokesman in response to an e-mailed query from Inside Line.
Inside Line says: If you own the aforementioned Honda CR-V, be aware that the feds are looking into complaints about the low beam headlights.

I haven't heard any complaints about the newer Honda products with transmission failure at all. Honda did have transmission problems from 00'-04' with there 5 speed transmissions on Acura tl,odyssey, pilot and accords. They had a federal lawsuit and recall on these because the transmissions were locking up while going down the highway. I own an 00' tl its had 2 previous transmissions but it took until 05' for them to actually fix the problems with it and now that it has been replaced after 05' no problems at all with the transmission. I luv my Acura and do not plan to sell it anytime soon have 143k on it and will keep it until 300k like my last Honda.

Really? 12 complaints???? and they open an investgation??? wow. It only took 668 calls for them to open an investigation on the GM fuel guage telling people they still have a 1/4 tank when the tank is bone dry, letting the run out of gas in the middle of the interstate...
I am not a math major, but I think that is 0.0042%
What an huge fraction of the sales. (Sarcasm font)

Hey Honda, when are you going to recall the millions of faulty transmissions you built?
My 2010 Honda Odyssey is on its second with 13,000 miles.

I have a 2002 Chevrolet Prizm LSi, aka (Toyota Corolla), and in a year I had to replace 2 headlight bulbs, and 2 tailights.

If you want to talk about faulty headlights check into Hyundai.....I had an 01 Elantra and evry2-3 months the left headlight would go out.....Hyundai said nothing was wrong.....When you see a car with a headlight out; it usually is a Hyundai. I have had 2 VWs since 05 and NEVER HAD I CHANGED A HEADLIGHT! NHTSA seems to be after Japanese companies...Look what they did to Toyota and without finding ANYTHING

Pretty easy to figure out that the wire gauge/contacts in the switch, or how the circuit itself is wired (higher current running through the switch) is the cause of the problem. Overheating/melting doesn't happen randomly.
It's also probably no coincidence that this investigation covers only 2002-2004 models, since the headlights were redesigned for 2005-2006.
