TORRANCE, California — Actor Matthew Broderick, star of the 1986 cult movie classic Ferris Bueller's Day Off, reprises the role — as himself — in Honda's Super Bowl commercial "Matthew's Day Off." Co-star is the redesigned 2012 Honda CR-V.
Film aficionados and vintage car buffs may recall the original John Hughes flick prominently featured a stunning 1961 Ferrari 250 GT California, which Broderick (as Bueller) took for an extended joy ride while skipping school.
In the Super Bowl spot, Broderick skips a day of work while taking his new CR-V on a series of equally implausible, but considerably more mundane, "adventures."
The clip also features Yello's hypnotic "Oh Yeah" from the original movie soundtrack.
Before posting an extended version of the new commercial Monday on YouTube, Honda released a 10-second teaser that had garnered more than 4.4 million hits as of Monday morning.
Inside Line says: Still one of the greatest movie car lines of all time: "Ferris, my father loves this car more than life itself."

Commercial was ok, not really funny but definitely brings back good memories...
Now, how about hiring some better engineers and designers, Honda, yeah, bring back the old Honda that was innovative in technology and design...

Too bad Honda can't be more innovative with its products. Perhaps Honda, instead of looking backward at was really only a just OK movie, should look back to the same era, when they made agile, fun, frugal cars? Anyhow, this is still better than "Mr. Opportunity," the creators of which I hope have been fired.

Starting with a wonderful teaser, I've left a bit cold by the end product of Honda CR-V spot. Unfortunately, the only original and creative part of the ad is that it is based on the cult classic Ferris Bueller's Day Off. That was a flash of genius.
Even thought the time is limited and the attention span of the web browsing population even more so, I do feel like the actual spot could have had more momentum in it, even if it had meant for the clip to be longer. Now, the spot has the taste of creative compromise written all over it, with no daring finesse at sight. It truly feels like a play it safe move by honda. This could also be the key reason the spot doesn't have the emotional tie-in, that the last years 'winner' VW had with their Star Wars spot.
Being that the ad is a 'hack-of' of the Loved Ferris Bueller character, the spot will surely cause debate and gain exposure, but I highly doubt that it will cause an emotional tie with the Honda brand that would last longer than the Superbowl season - at least not a positive one.
A spot of promise never fulfilling the destiny it could have had. Unfortunate, but true.

I like the ad, it's amusing and it made me laugh (liked the museum scene most) and I like Matthew Broderick as well, however, the CR-V is crap.

Really, Honda? Really??.....Looks like this is Grandpa's attempt at Kia's more youthful Sorrento commercials with the stuffed animals. Great commercials, btw. Matthew looks like he just woke up from the dead, with all the powder. You're getting really old and it definitely shows. Gotta stay awake....gotta stay awake........zzzzzzzzzz.

I think its great and really do wish he/they would do a part 2 as a "day off from work" (vs day off from school ).Matthew could still make it work .

Like all of honda's products...yawn. He looks old and out of place but with way too much makeup. The ad isn't funny.
