2012 Honda CR-V Introduction Delayed by Quake

    Just the Facts:
    • As some of Honda's Japanese parts suppliers continue to struggle in the aftermath of the quake and tsunami, the automaker has delayed the introduction of its redesigned 2012 CR-V.
    • Honda also said it will curtail production of other Japan-sourced models for the North American market, including the redesigned 2012 Honda Civic.
    • Japanese-built models expected to remain in short supply in North America include the Honda Fit, CR-Z, Insight and Civic Hybrid and the Acura TSX, TSX Wagon and RL.

TORRANCE, California — Honda Motor will delay by one month the introduction this fall of the redesigned 2012 CR-V, while extending production of the current 2011 CR-V by one month, as some of the automaker's Japanese parts suppliers continue to struggle to re-establish production in the aftermath of that country's devastating quake and tsunami.

Honda also said it will curtail production of other Japan-sourced models for the North American market, including the redesigned 2012 Honda Civic, "at least through the summer months."

Japanese-built models expected to remain in short supply in North America through the end of the year include the Honda Fit, CR-Z, Insight and Civic Hybrid and the Acura TSX, TSX Wagon and RL.

Honda said production volume in Japan "will remain at significantly reduced levels" through the summer months, with the goal of normalizing production "sometime around the end of the year." Honda said the gradual ramp-up in production "will occur step-by-step, and it will vary based on plant and model." In the meantime, the company in North America plans to "bring in only a very limited number of Japan-built vehicles for the remainder of the year."

Honda said it "plans no layoffs at any of its North American facilities."

Inside Line says: Even though more than 80 percent of the vehicles that it sells in North America are assembled in the region, Honda has proved how vulnerable a company can be when a small handful of critical parts is disrupted by a natural disaster elsewhere.

There are no CR-V's assembled in Mexico.

Juan must be thinking of the current Ford Fusion, which is a Mazda-6-based car assembled in Mexico.

CR-V's bound for U.S. are assembled primarily in USA and a few in Canada.

"Ford must be devastated with the news. If only they had a small segment car to replace the Civic..."

The Focus competes quite well with the Civic.

Honda isnt in any hurry or time agaisnt the clock to sell cars.
Anyway if theres a lack of supply, got a used Honda, save money and got
a better car than a new model.

I believe most of the 2011 CR-Vs for the NA market are assembled in Mexico. (VIN starts with "3")

Anybody knows if this is going to be the case for the 2012 CR-V?

Well, if it's as "groundbreaking" as the new Civic, they shouldn't even bother.

The current CR-V can't sell any better, so Honda shouldn't care one way or another
