TOKYO — Mugen, the Honda parts specialist, is apparently under the impression that the latest three-door Honda Civic Type R is not living up to its full potential. So the firm decided to beef it up with a set of modifications from its high-performance 2008 Honda Civic Mugen RR.
The Type R is equipped with a 2.0-liter VTEC four-cylinder engine, and Mugen's treatment will bump output to 237 horsepower and 160 pound-feet of torque. Performance modifications include the RR's upgraded suspension and huge Brembo 12.6-inch slotted brakes in front and 11.1 inches in the rear.
Amenities take a backseat to performance, literally, with the removal of the rear seats, and Mugen will also add a carbon-fiber body kit and 18-inch alloys to further cut weight. A fresh set of Recaro bucket seats will also be used from the Mugen RR.
The Mugen Type R will be priced in the $57,000-$65,000 range, and a few dozen should be available for sale in the U.K. by this fall. Mugen expects it to compete with the other hot U.K. hatches like the 2009 Ford Focus RS and the Renault Mégane R26.R.
Inside Line says: Quite a hefty price tag, even if it does wear the legendary Mugen name. — Mike Lysaght, Correspondent
