    • The new Civic goes on sale in Europe in early 2012.

LONDON — Honda said its redesigned Civic for Europe will feature a cleaner, more powerful four-cylinder diesel engine. The latest version of the i-DTEC engine will make 148 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque.

Honda Europe released two more disguised images of the car, along with a video.

Honda said the new Civic is more aerodynamic than its predecessor and with i-DTEC engine will emit only 110g/km of CO2. Cars with manual transmissions will be even cleaner, with a stop-start system reducing CO2 emissions further to 105g/km.

The new car, which will be offered to European customers only as a five-door hatchback, will make its public debut next month at the 2011 Frankfurt Auto Show and goes on sale in early 2012.

European competitors to the ninth-generation Honda Civic include the Ford Focus, the Opel Astra and the Volkswagen Golf .

Honda said the new Civic will be assembled at its U.K. manufacturing plant in Swindon, England.

Inside Line says: Cleaner, more slippery and less thirsty — sounds like Honda did its homework well.

@northSparrow: not quite: 101g/km for Insight but definitely much more powerful and probably less polarizing design. I think this might compete as well with the CT200h instead of the planned new Acura hatchback.

I say sell it as an Acura.  They already sell the European and Japanese Accord as the Acura TSX.

    Hatchback?

    Diesel?

    40+MPG?

Sounds like it would be more powerful, versatile, economical and fun to drive than the Insight so naturally Honda will stick to their winning formula and refuse to sell it over here.
