TORRANCE, California — Honda released details about its 2009 Civic lineup on Tuesday, spelling out that as Americans embrace "small cars more than ever," the Japanese automaker is stepping up with more choices. Among the new variants: a 2009 Honda Civic DX value package and a 2009 Civic LX-S sedan.

Favorites such as the performance-oriented 2009 Honda Civic Si get standard foglights and a restyled alloy wheel design for the new model year. The Civic Si's powertrain remains unchanged with a 197-horsepower DOHC 2.0-liter i-VTEC four-cylinder engine mated to a six-speed manual transmission.

The 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid has been tweaked with the addition of standard electronic stability control and new optional leather-trimmed interior. Power for the Civic Hybrid is provided by a 1.3-liter i-VTEC four-cylinder engine and a 15kw electric motor that delivers 110 horsepower.

The 2009 Civic DX value package includes air-conditioning, an AM/FM/CD audio system, an auxiliary input jack, power windows and 15-inch steel wheels with covers. That model gets the 140-hp 1.8-liter SOHC i-VTEC four-cylinder engine linked to a standard five-speed manual transmission.

The 2009 Civic LX-S sedan bundles such items as alloy wheels, sport-trimmed black cloth seats with synthetic suede bolsters and silver stitching, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, a rear deck spoiler and a chrome exhaust finisher.

Honda points out that the '09 Civic gets some design changes, including a new front bumper cover and grille design, along with new headlight and taillight color combinations.

What this means to you: No earth-shaking changes for the Civic in the new model year, just a bit of exterior burnishing and a couple more model choices. — Anita Lienert, Correspondent
